Within weeks of harvesting the second grow bed the fish became very ill and died. We haven't been able to determine if a new fish we had added to the tank was the cause of death (which was in questionable health) or if it was from harvesting an entire bed of lettuce. We are contemplating using a different kind of base for the plants to grow in (we were using media base or pea gravel). We plan to get some new fish pretty soon here. This time we are going to closely monitor the fish before planting the veggies. Updates on the new system coming soon.
Meanwhile, we have completely cleaned the grow beds and tank. In the video below, my husband demonstrates a neat little trick for cleaning the tubing from our aquaponics system.

Chemical Testing of your Aquaponics System.
I am pretty good at documenting, but my hubby is the true mastermind behind this project. We are trying to collaborate on this project a bit more in terms of sharing information, but for now we are best at explaining things in our own ways.
Here he explains chemical testing:
Start out by making regular tests every 48 to 72 hours upon establishing a system before and during fish introduction. Once your system is established you should conduct tests any time you make a change to the system (such as harvesting) or if the behavior of your fish suddenly change.
